British Weather
The Lake District is beautiful year-round, but the weather can be unpredictable.
Spring & Summer offer the best chance of sunshine and lush scenery, perfect for outdoor photos.
Autumn brings rich colours and a cosy feel.
Winter weddings are magical with frost or snow, but require careful planning for travel and warmth.
Even in summer, rain is always possible. Make sure your venue has indoor options and ensure there are umbrellas or wellies on standby.
Make it legal
For civil or religious ceremonies, these will need to be held at a licensed venue, registry office or church. A symbolic ceremony like on the lakeshore or a mountain are not legally binding so you will still need a civil or church ceremony as well.
You and your partner must visit your local registry office in person to give notice of marriage. This needs to be done at least 29 days before your wedding and tells the government you plan to marry and where. Remember to bring a valid passport or birth certificate, proof of your address and if you’ve been married before, your divorce papers or a death certificate.
If you’re having a civil ceremony, you’ll need to book a registrar to perform it.
Contact Cumbria Registration Service to arrange this.
Transport
Some venues in the Lake District are remote or hard to reach. Hiring a minibus or coach for guests is a good idea. Ensure you provide parking information or clear directions.
By Train: Windermere has a train station, with regular connections via Oxenholme (on the West Coast Main Line).
By Car: Remind guests that some routes are narrow and winding.
For guests staying at Windermere Manor, it’s walkable to Windermere station, close to many local venues and it’s a great pick-up/drop-off point for shuttles or taxis.
It is also a good idea to let guests know about limited mobile signal in rural spots, of which there are quite a few in the Lakes!
Embrace the magic
No matter how much you plan, the Lake District has a way of surprising you — a sudden rainbow, soft mist rolling over the fells, or an unexpected moment of stillness by the lake.
Don’t worry if things aren’t perfectly timed or the weather shifts.
Take a breath, look around, and soak it all in.
